WHO ARE WE?
Lucky2Bhere was established in 2007 by Ross Cowie who had experienced a cardiac arrest and was lucky in that an ambulance was nearby on the evening of the arrest and was able to use lifesaving equipment in their possession. As a result of his experience he decided to raise funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Skye Camanachd Shinty Club in Portree.A committee was established to raise funds to buy a defib for the social Club and train people to use it. From these beginnings L2BH grew in a way that had not been predicted. Lucky2BHere is a now a registered Charity with an elected Committee and Trustees run on a voluntary basis with many people offering their time and support.Initially we provided defibs and other live saving equipment and training to both the general public and medical professionals from Skye to Inverness. Recently the formation of a Heartstart team in Skye has been a major development, providing training at no cost. Previously we had to buy training in – an expense for the Charity.
ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE
We have now provided defibs to many rural
communities, some extremely remote. Recently one was delivered with the
associated training to Knoydart which is only accessible by sea and air. They
have been placed in the University of the Highlands campus’s at Sabhal Mor
Ostaig, Portree High School and many other strategic locations. There is also one provided in Portree Police
Station and another to follow in Kyle of Lochalsh station as the Police are
available 24/7 and are often the first people to arrive at the scene of an
emergency. We have provided ECG machines, Heart and BP
monitors, run training courses for nurses and paramedics and what we believe is
the corner stone to build the future on, Portree High School has become a
Heartstart School. All this of course needs money. Our funds are
generated through exercise, runs, cycles, swims etc which support the ethos of
L2BH supplemented by donations and community contributions.
FUNDRAISING
We have taken what we believe to be an innovative approach to fundraising
by focusing on initiatives related to exercise, health and wellbeing.
We are attracting not just athletes to participate but individuals who want to
change their lifestyle and have their own targets and ambition. They may
have weight related issues, want to stop smoking or prove that they can do
something despite an illness.
We expect any community who wants life saving equipment to raise some
funds themselves and contribute to the Charity as this shows their
commitment to the project. They are also responsible for identifying
individuals to undertake training.
